Virtual dressing room for a digital age

The past year has been hard on all of us in ways we did not expect. Kedan, Jeff, and I are Ph.D. students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Computer Science department. Our academic lives were abruptly disrupted right at the beginning of 2020 when we were all sent home due to the pandemic. Like many others, we were frustrated and tired of our remote lives.

The 3 of us are experts in virtual dressing room technology, a decades-old problem that only very recently became possible to deploy at scale at an affordable cost credited to our research in machine learning and image generation Revery.AI started from us wanting to use our skills to make things a little bit easier for everyone. Today, 90% of the population is shopping online, and this number is growing by the day. However, there exists a huge gap between the engagement of online and physical shopping. Customers are frustrated at not being able to try out clothes online, seeing how they look and fit; retailers are frustrated at the low online conversions and high return rates. We think we can help both sides by creating the first production-ready virtual dressing room.

Induction into Y Combinator Summer 2021

In the one year since we have conceptualized this idea, we have made great progress. We have integrated with our first e-commerce customer to bring to life an actual working virtual dressing room. And today, we are happy to announce that we are participating in Y Combinator’s Summer 2021 class under the guidance of 4 awesome YC partners: Michael Seibel, Calvin French-Owen, Tim Brady, and Diana Hu. Getting into a YC is a huge deal for us; we hope to follow in the footsteps of great YC alumni such as Dropbox, Airbnb, and Stripe.

YC has been an amazing experience for us even with it being fully remote. We are grateful for the wealth of invaluable advice given to us by our partners and the community for being so welcoming and giving. YC will be the impetus for us to do even better. Our next goal is to enable an inclusive virtual dressing room for people of all shapes and sizes and make online shopping fun and engaging for everyone!
